Sergio Scabar. SILENCE OF THE LIGHT

The LipanjePuntin artecontemporanea gallery presents in Rome “Silence of the light”, a solo exhibition by photographer Sergio Scabar

LipanjePuntin artecontemporanea presents until 10 May a solo exhibition in May by photographer Sergio Scabar, entitled “Silence of the light”. Starting from a simple photographic shot, Scabar creates unique pieces of art through his use of a virtually maniacal printing technique that is both mysterious and alchemic. His works are the result of an elaborate series of manual processes, only apparently traditional, in which the exposed negative is slowly transformed.

«I wish that the images I provide ware a vague intuition, a presentiment, a glance…». Sergio Scabar

His is an elaboration of reality that reveals a world made of shadings, suffused light and deep shadows, all part of the patient, slow and poetic research by the artist. Scabar’s particular imagery is exclusively created through photographic means, without any additional pictorial or digital modification. The artist aims to achieve a balance between light-sensitive materials, chemical products, paper and water to emphasise brightness, shadow and form.

This direct contact with the materials is fundamental for Scabar, for it incorporates his concept of the desire to work solely with traditional methods and the meticulousness of classical photography. The laborious printing method creates one-off prints, determined by his well-balanced ratio of chemical versus sensual input. Scabar tackles the real and visual issues concerning the reproducibility of photography, devising his own combination of poetry and craftsmanship.

In these works the two elements of still-life and landscape are unified in the same image

For this exhibition, Scabar presents still-lives, landscapes and several new works especially created for this show in which the two elements – still-life and landscape – are unified in the same image. Objects of daily usage are shown as being caressed by light or enclosed by a soft glow, while the backgrounds become dark disguises to evoke a dreamlike atmosphere, full of suspense. The further singularity of each photograph is emphasised by the different frame that Scabar personally creates for his images, whereby he takes the subject matter of the individual work into consideration.
